GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE C.America - Caribbean

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Climbing vine with large unusal flowers. LEAVES wide heart-shaped, 12x15cm, blunt tipped. FLOWERS axillary, solitary, on long stalk; mottled red, yellow, green and purple; base inflated, 7cmØ; limb with two lobes, lower lobe rigid, erect, lanceolate 20cm; upper lobe obovate-spoonlike, not deflexed, 8x5cm.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Rooster Flower (Aristolochia labiata) has upper lobe pendent, ruffled, round, 15x18cm (vs. straight, spoon-like, 8x5cm). [Not recorded in Cook Islands]
