COMMON NAMES: Emerald Fern and Foxtail Fern, Emerald-feather ['Sprengeri'], Sprenger Asparagus ['Sprengeri'], Sprengeri ['Sprengeri'], Coarse Asparagus-fern ['Sprengeri'], Plume Fern ['Meyers'], Foxtail Fern ['Meyers']

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.Africa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental leaves

KEY FEATURES: 'SPRENGERI': Drooping shrub. BRANCHES to 2m; terminal branchlets to 15cm, ±basal spine to 6mm. LEAVES (=cladophylls) 2-5 per node, strap-like, ~25x2mm. FLOWERS axillary cluster; minute to 7mmØ, white; petals 6, star-like. FRUIT spherical, 10mmØ, pale green ripening red. SEED 1, round, 5mmØ, black. 'Myers': erect foxtail-like stems to 80cm, cladodes bright, light green.
