General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yesterday-today-tomorrow, Brunfelsia, Kiss-me-quick; German Brunfelsie

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Brazil

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; S.Group - uncommon, N.Group - absent; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 2m. LEAVES alternate, oval to narrow-oval to 15cm. FLOWERS 1-10, tube 4cm and face 3-7cmØ with 5 petals; purple (with white centre) fading to white. Easily confused with a couple of other species.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Although not presently recorded in Cook Islands these might be present. Brunfelsia latifolia flowers with tube 2cm and face 3cmØ (vs 4cm and 3-7cmØ), pale purple with white centre (vs purple with white). Brunfelsia uniflora short to 50cm (vs 200cm); flowers tube 3cm and face 3cmØ (vs 4cm tube and 3-7cmØ), blue-purple with yellow throat (vs purple with white centre).

IDENTIFICATION: Bushy shrub to 2m. LEAVES alternate, oval to narrow-oval, to 15cm, tip acute. FLOWERS throughout year; terminal clusters of 1-10; each tube to 4cm, and face 3-7cmØ with 5 round petals, violet (with white centre) fading over 3 days to white; not fragrant.
