General Information

COMMON NAMES: Honolulu Rose, Fragrant Clerodendrum

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Pītate-māma‘o (RR); COMMENT: From Māma‘o in Tahiti.

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.China

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Semi-Naturalised; Land, lowlands - inland valleys

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers; Weed - serious but localised (Rarotonga only)

KEY FEATURES: A hardy shrub to 2m. The leaves are oval with a pointed tip, toothed edges, fine hairs below and stiff hairs above(to 30x25cm LxW). Flowers are white, double (=many petals), in a flat-cluster toward the ends the branches. sterile.

POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Ornamental flowers
NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Weed - serious but localised (Rarotonga only). Comments: Spreads vegetatively to form dense thickets. Very difficult to control. Does not produce viable seed.
