Scientific Taxonomy

Cochlospermum vitifolium (Willd.)
SYNONYMS: Cochlospermum hibiscoides

TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); DILLENIIDAE; Violales; BIXACEAE. COMMENT: $Cochlospermum@ is placed in either the family: COCHLOSPERMACEAE (Order Malvales) or the family BIXACEAE (Order Violales). RHS Index of Garden Plants states that the former follows the classification system of Dahlgren, and the latter that of Cronquist. The placement of the two families in different Orders by the two authors raises obvious questions. At the time of writing these had not been resolved .
