General Information

COMMON NAMES: Native Ladder-Orchid

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Vanuata, Cook Islands - Australs - Societies (disjunct)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group only (Rarotonga only - common); Land, mountains, epiphyte

KEY FEATURES: On trees with longer stems pendent to 80cm. LEAVES alternate, in two tiers, ascending toward stem tip, fleshy, glossy green, narrow-oval, 6x2cm, midrib furrowed, edge downturned, base round, tip round with notch; stalk nil. FLOWERS 3-5mm above a leaf, a facing pair, on stalks to 1cm; each boomerang-shaped, cream to greenish, with petal/sepals to 1.5cm.

GENERAL NOTE: Dendrobium is a large genus of orchids with more than 1,400 species. Vanuatu has 25 indigenous species, and Fiji has 22 species.
