General Information

COMMON NAMES: Dodonaea

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Ākē (RR), ‘Ake (MG)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE pantropical and subtropical

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, lowlands - mountains (+++)

KEY FEATURES: Variable shrub, locally to 2m (elsewhere to 6m). Branches ascending. LEAVES alternate, ascending, oval, to 10x3cm, edge smooth, tip sharp, glossy green; stalk 1cm. FLOWERS in small terminal clusters to 5cm, without petals; plants unisexual; MALE small to 5mmØ, ~8 stamens, sepals 4; FEMALE small to 3mmØ, styles ~3, to 9mm; flowers sometimes bisexual. FRUIT (=capsules) reddish, with 2-3 longitudinal wings. Wind dispersed.
