General Information

COMMON NAMES: Cockspur Coral-Tree, Cry-baby Tree, Common Coral Tree; German Korallenstrauch

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.Brazil - n.Argentina

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Small tree, to 9m, flowering with the leaves. BRANCHES prickly. LEAVES alternate with 3 leaflets, stalk spiny 15cm; LEAFLETS central largest, 12x8cm, tip sharp. FLOWERS solitary or clusters; dark scarlet; main petal curved-back, 45mm; stamens and style clustered. FRUIT pod, curved, 15x1.5cm. SEEDS dark brown with paler markings.
