General Information

COMMON NAMES: Dadap

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Taetapu (MG); Other Polynesian - Gatae Pālagi (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE se.Asia - Philippines - Indonesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent (post-1930), Naturalised; Land, lowlands, horticultural - inland valleys

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: manure

KEY FEATURES: Tree to 15m. LEAVES terminal clusters, alternate, compound, stalk 20cm, 3 leaflets. LEAFLETS rhomboid, dull green; central largest, wide-oval, 20x15cm, tip sharp, stalklet without nodules. FLOWERS terminal spike to 20cm, blooming serially from base; red; pea-like, main petal (=standard) oval, 40mm, with white veins; stamens and style, clustered. FRUIT pod, to 15x2.5cm, flat, curved, outer section fertile with 1-5 dark brown seeds.
