General Information

COMMON NAMES: Pua, Pua Kenikeni

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE New Guinea - Micronesia - ne.Aust. - Marquesas

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group only (all except Palmerston); Land, lowlands - mountains (+++)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Medicine, Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Large spreading tree to 15m. LEAVES terminal clusters, opposite with adjacent pairs at right-angles; wide-oval, to 16x8cm, glossy dark green, edge smooth, tip obtuse to round, base tapering; stalk to 2cm. FLOWERS terminal clusters; corolla tube flaring to 5cmØ with 5 round petals, white, discarded orange. FRUIT ovoid with pointed tip, 2cmØ, orange. SEEDS numerous, small, black.
