General Information

COMMON NAMES: Indian Prune, Rukam

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Malesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands - mountains (+)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (Fruit 0+); Invasive - moderate; Injurous spines

KEY FEATURES: Tree to 15m, without spines. LEAVES alternate, ovate to oval, to 20x10cm, tip blunt but protruding, base base; teeth low and rounded; stalk 1cm. FLS small clusters; unisexual, small. FRUIT round, 25mmØ, ripen burgundy; 5 remnant styles, to 1mm. SEEDS 5 pairs in radiating array; triangular, 6x6x3mm, rough surfaced. Sour, but sweetened by kneading.
