General Information

COMMON NAMES: Paper-flower Flemingia

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.Asia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, sparingly naturalised; S.Group - uncommon; N.Group - absent; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers, ei

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 1.5m. LEAVES alternate, ovate, to 20x10cm, base round, tip acute with spinelet, edge without teeth, underside downy; stalk 2cm.[The leaves of the genus are actually trifoliolate and this species has a single leaftlet appearing as a simple leaf!] FLOWERS in branching axial clusters; a mass of large papery bracts (to 3x2cm) containing small purple flowers.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Three-leaflet Flemingia (Flemingia macrophylla) has 3 leaflets (vs. 1-leaflet); and flowers with a small, short-lived bract (vs. large, persistent bract).
