General Information

COMMON NAMES: Grewia

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Au‘ere (RR); Other Polynesian - Fo ‘Ui (TON), Fau Ui (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Micronesia - Melanesia - Societies

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Groups only (RR only - uncommon but widespread); Land, mountains (100-450m elevation)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Nationally endangered (moderately)

KEY FEATURES: Small tree to 6m. LEAVES alternate, simple, wide-oval, to 15x9cm, glossy green, base round, tip sharp, edge numerous small teeth. FLOWERS axillary, small clusters; each 3cmØ; sepals 5, spreading, oval, to 15x5mm, tip sharp, white above, green below; stamens many; style with tip green and 2-lobed. FRUIT 8mmØ, subspherical to 3-lobed, maturing black.
