General Information

COMMON NAMES: White Ginger, Garland Flower, Butterfly Ginger; German Schmetterlingsblume

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kōpī Teatea (RR), Kōpī (MG), Re‘a Teatea (AT MK), Re‘a (MT), Kaopui Teatea (AK); Other Polynesian - Teuila (TON), Teuila (SAM), Opuhi Tea (TAH)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Himalayas - sw.China

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands - mountains (+++)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers; Invasive - serious (Rarotonga), Weed - moderate

KEY FEATURES: A perennial herb to 2m. STEM ascending from creeping root; unbranched. LEAVES alternate in two rows, narrow-oval, large to 60x10cm, glossy dark green. FLOWERS in terminal cluster, fragrant, year round; white with slender basal tube to 8cm and 3 large "petals" to 5x5cm. FRUIT oblong capsule with red seeds. SEEDS ovoid, 4x3mm.
