General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bat's-wing Fern

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Are-Rupe (RR)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Circumtropical and substropical, including Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, mountains (++)

KEY FEATURES: Root long-creeping, with narrow scales. FROND-STALK long, to 150cm, dark to black, glossy, stout (to 1.5cmØ). FROND-BLADE large, side-branches opposite, paired basal-leaflets (like stipules), 2x to 3x divided, leaflets (=pinnules) opposite, terminal leaflets deeply lobed. SORI in continuous submarginal line except at leaflet-tip.
