COMMON NAMES: Asian Cup-and-saucer Plant, Parasol Plant, Mandarin's-hat Plant, Chinese-hat Plant

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Himalayas - n.India

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; S.Group only, rare (Rarotonga only); Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Straggling shrub to 5m. LEAVES oppoiste, oval, 10-7cm, edge smooth to small-toothed; stalk 3cm. FLOWERS in clusters; calyx saucer-like, 2cmØ, corolla tube-like to 2cm; red, orange, to yellow.

SIMILAR SPECIES: African Cup-and-saucer Plant (Holmskioldia tettensis) has leaves broad-toothed (vs smooth or small-toothed); leaf-stalk 1cm (vs 3cm); flowers pink, purple to blue (vs red, orange to yellow); stamens and style protruding 15mm (vs 5mm).

IDENTIFICATION: Straggling shrub or small tree to 5m. BRANCHLETS sharply 4-angled. LEAVES opposite, simple, oval, to 10x7cm, edge smooth to small-toothed; stalks to 3cm. FLOWERS axillary or terminal clusters; calyx saucer-like, to 2cmØ, red or orange; corolla tubular, 2cm, red, with 5 lobes. cv 'Citrina' or 'Aurea' yellow.
