COMMON NAMES: Ipil

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Madagascar - Asia - Samoa / Tonga

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; S.Group only (Rarotonga - 1 tree); Land, lowlands, gardens; in natural range coastal to 400m

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental

KEY FEATURES: Spreading tree to 25m. LEAVES compound, (1-)2 paired leaflets. LEAFLETS 2 pairs, asymmetrical wide-oval, to 15x8cm, dark green, tip obtuse or notched; stalklets short, to 1cm. FLOWERS in terminal clusters to 15cmØ; fragrant; sepals 4, oval, pale green; petals one, white aging purple, 12x10mm; style green, short, 5mm; mature stamens 3, purple, long, to 3cm. FRUIT flat, oval pod, to 20x6cm; SEEDS 3-6, flat, round, 3cmØ.
