General Information

COMMON NAMES: Jungle-flame Ixora, Burning Love, Jungle Flame, Jungle Geranium, Flame-of-the-Forest; German Scharlachrote Ixora

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE sw.India - Sri lanka

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 2m. LEAVES opposite, oval to oblong, to 15cm; sessile; base usually cordate and clasping, to round. FLOWERS large terminal cluster, corolla tube slender, 3cm; lobes 4, to 15mm, ovate to lance-like, tip acute to obtuse; red, orange, yellow, pink, white; face 3cmØ. FRUIT globose, 1cmØ, ripening reddish-black; seeds 2. Cultivars numerous.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Chinese Ixora (Ixora chinensis) has leaf-stalk none (vs. very short); leaf-base wedge-shaped to round (vs. round to cordate); petal-tip round to obtuse (vs. usually acute).
