General Information

COMMON NAMES: Crape Myrtle Tree, Queen-of-flowers, Queen's Crape Myrtle, Queen's Crepe Myrtle, Rose of India [misnomer], Pride of India [misnomer] ["crape" is British English of French "crepe"]

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE se.Asia - Malesia - Philippines

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: TREE to 15m. LEAVES long oval, pointed tip, to 25cm. FLOWERS terminal clusters; pink to purple; to 7cmØ; petals wrinkled; stamens golden (130+); buds furry, ornately ridged. FRUIT dry-capsule.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Crape Myrtle Shrub (Lagerstroemia indica) differs in being a shrub (to 3m), having small leaves to 5cm, small flowers to 3cm, with only ~40 stamens, and having smooth buds.
