GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Southeast Polynesia (Rarotonga, Societies)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of se.Polynesia; Land, mountains (+)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Locally endangered

KEY FEATURES: Ground and low-climbing epiphytic fern. FRONDS to 1m; stalk base densely hairy; leaves ~opposite, ladderlike (pinnate), lancelike, to 20x4cm. Fertile-frond leaves to 12x1cm, spores covering underside of leaves.

SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
BIODIVERSITY: Locally endangered. Comment: First collected 1991 by G.McCormack, known from one site only in upper Avana Valley.

IDENTIFICATION: Ground and low-climbing epiphytic fern, with fronds to 1m. ROOT thick and hairy, with well-spaced fronds. Low-climbing to 3m, with fertile fronds uppermost. FROND non-fertile: stalk, to 40cm, with brown hairs, especially at the base; leaves ladderlike, opposite to sub-opposite; LEAVES lancelike, to 20x4cm, leathery, base round and asymmetrical, tip sharp, stalk short to 2mm. FROND fertile: smaller; leaves smaller, to 12x1cm, fleshy and brittle; spores cover underside except for midrib.
