General Information

COMMON NAMES: Macaranga

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Enua (RR MG); Other Polynesian - Fanua Mamala (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Fiji - Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group only (Rarotonga, Mangaia & Atiu only); Land, lowlands - mountains

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Material (Wood)

KEY FEATURES: Spreading tree to 10m. LEAVES in terminal clusters; alternate; large, inverted-teardrop, to 40x35cm; base round, tip sharp; stalk long, to 30cm, joining blade near centre (=peltate) with a short spine on upper surface; glossy green with yellow veins. FLOWERS sexes on different trees. MALE in small, widely-spaced clusters on long, slender branchlets; each cluster of several minute flowers in a semi-circular bract; each flower with 5-10 stamens. FEMALE spaced along fleshy branchlets; each a small sphere with 2-3 styles to 10mm; styles very papillose inside. FRUIT round, 10mmØ, with a few round processes to 10mm, and 2-3 styles to 10mm, green, with 2 seeds.
