General Information

COMMON NAMES: Polynesian Sedge

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Southeast Polynesia (Cooks - Societies)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of se.Polynesia; Land, mountains (++)

KEY FEATURES: Sedge to 70cm with long leaves. BASAL LEAVES ~10, to 100x2.5cm; midrib in deep-V, spiny underside; edge with fine teeth, readily cut skin. FLOWER STALK 50cm, sharply 3-angled; radiating leaves (=involucral leaves), ~7, decreasing markedly in size from oldest (to 60x2cm); structure similar to basal leaves. FLOWER CLUSTERS on rays (to 10cm); ~10, hemispherical, 20x15mmØ.
