General Information

COMMON NAMES: Lacy Sword-Ferns, Boston Fern, Lace Fern, Feather Fern

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent (~1990), Not naturalised; Land

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental fern

KEY FEATURES: A lacy fern with many varieites. FRONDS erect to sprawling, STALK (=stipe) 10-20cm, initially scaly; BLADE linear, vary with variety to 200x15cm. PINNAE numerous, to 7x1cm, base rounded with ear, tip sharp; often subdivided 2-3 times, to form a dense lace. Original cultivar was "Bostoniensis" or "Boston", others include "Fluffy Duffy", "Fluffy Ruffles", "Frizzy Lizzy", "Florida Ruffle", "Irish Lace", and "Verona Lace" ("Verona"). .

SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Ornamental fern. Comments: Ann Tierney imported one variety in 1990 (G.McCormack).

GENERAL NOTE: In 1894, a cultivar of Nephrolepis exaltata was discovered in a shipment from a Philadelphia grower to a Boston distributor and named Nephrolepis exaltata cv. 'Bostoniensis', hence the name Boston fern. [Foster, 1984] It has given rise to many sports, from 1 to 5 times divided.
