COMMON NAMES: Guiana Chestnut, Provision Tree, Water Chestnut, Wild Cocoa, Malabar Chestnut, Guinea Chestnut [misnomer]

TRADITIONAL NAMES: I‘i Papa‘ā (RR MG)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Mexico - S.Amer.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (Fruit 1+)

KEY FEATURES: XXXXXXXXXXXX FLOWERS large, showy, greenish- or yellowish-white petals; stamens white, 200-250, anthers red.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Ceiba pentandra has small seeds surrounded by cotton.
