Peperomia oblancifolia Yuncker
TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); MAGNOLIIDAE; Piperales; PIPERACEAE
Vouchers:
Pukapuka: 2 specimens (HOLOTYPE BPBM/189993), coll. by Isidore, Whitney Expedition, pencilled label "Puka Puka ? Elev. 25ft (Feb. 26 1924 we were on Nassau) Collected by Isidore)" and typed label "Danger Islands? Pukapuka?, el.25ft., March? 1924, Whitney Expedition (by Isidore)" - indicating some original doubt about the date and location of the collection. The species has never been collected again. Sykes (pers.comm.) pointed out that there is a very similar endemic species on Tutuila, and maybe this specimen was collected in the Samoas. McCormack searched the 3 islets of Pukapuka during 3/2004 and failed to find any species of Peperomia. The atoll is typically about 4-5m elevation, although some man-made mounds are probably about 7-8m. (GM 4/2004) Probably a mistaken locality.
