COMMON NAMES: Wild Cape Gooseberry, Cape Gooseberry Weed, Annual Ground-Cherry

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Tupera Tāmaru-ariki (MG), Tāmaru (AT), Tūpere (MK); Other Polynesian - Vīvao (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE N.America - S.America

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (Fruit 1+) Preserves, Medicine; Weed - minor

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 1m. STEM ridged, fleshy, without hairs. LEAVES to 9x5cm, a few large teeth, base obtue, tip sharp to elongated, without hairs, veins protrude ventrally; stalk slightly winged, without hairs, 3cm. FLOWERS yellow, flared corolla, 1cmØ. FRUIT inflated bell-like capsule 3x2cm, fruit spherical 1cmØ
