General Information

COMMON NAMES: Black Pepper, Commercial Pepper, Pepper; German Pfeffer

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Pepa (MT); Other Polynesian - ‘Ava‘ava Aitu (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE India

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, horticultural, on trees

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (Fruit 0+) Cond

KEY FEATURES: Woody vine, basally to 4cmØ, attached by rootlets at the swollen nodes. LEAVES 1 per node, flat with downturned edge, 5 obvious longitudinal veins, wide-ovate, to 15x10cm, tip extended and sharp, base round; stalk 15mm.
