General Information

COMMON NAMES: Fernleaf Panax, Angelica, Chotto, Fernleaf Aralia

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kāpaiē (RR AT AK TS TW), Kaope Pā (MK); Other Polynesian - Tanetane (TON), Tanitani / Tagitagi / Tanetane (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE W.Pacific

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental leaves

KEY FEATURES: Erect shrub with vertical branches to 4m. LEAVES alternate, to 80cm, compound. LEAFLETS 9-15, green above, often variegated yellow; ovate to long-ovate, to 25x7cmlong, usually strongly lobed. LEAFLETS green to yellow-green (cv. 'Aurea') - as shown here.

TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); ROSIDAE; Apiales; ARALIACEAE. COMMENT: Polyscias filicifolia (Moore ex E.Fourn.) Bailey is based on an illustration which is near identical to juvenile stages of Polyscias cumingiana in New Caledonia [P.P.Lowry II (1989) A Revision of Araliaceae from Vanuatu]
