General Information

COMMON NAMES: Pineapple Ginger, Giant Spiral Ginger; French Reine de Malaisie

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental (Flower/Leaf)

KEY FEATURES: A herb to 2m with spirally arranged leaves and a basal stalk with a terminal spike of red waxy flowers. STEM reed-like, to 2m. LEAVES arrranged spirally, narrow-obovate, 15cm. FLOWERS stalk to 1m with 20cm spiral cluster; bracts waxy, scarlet to crimson, in pineapple-like pattern.
