General Information

COMMON NAMES: Shower-of-Gold Vine, Bagnit, Shower of Gold Climber

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE se.Asia - Australia - New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Woody vine. LEAVES opposite, thick, glossy, ovate, BASE ROUND TO HEART-SHAPED, to 10x5cm, edge smooth, tip pointed. FLOWERS 10+ in terminal clusters; to 30mmØ; 5 equal oval petals; STYLE 1 UNDIVIDED; stamens 10, stalks/filaments yellow turning dark red. FRUIT (not seen) 12mmØ, 3 pats, each 7-rayed.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Galphimia gracilis is an erect shrub (vs. vine); 3 long styles (vs. 1 undivided); leaves tapering base (vs. round or heart-shaped). Brazilian Golden Vine (Stigmaphyllon ciliatum, not presently recorded in Cook Islands) is a vine with yellow flowers and heart-shaped leaves, but leaf edges hairy and with narrow teeth; flower clusters 3-7, PETALS ROUND UNEQUAL; STYLES 3; to 35mmØ.
