General Information

COMMON NAMES: Purple Beach-pea

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE pantropical, incl. Pacific

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Weed - minor

KEY FEATURES: Perennial vine to 4m. STEM thin, round, ~3mm. LEAVES alternate, stalk to 9cm, 3-leaflets. LEAFLETS green with small hairs; central symetrical, oval to rhombic, 10x8cm, stalk 2.5cm; laterals asymmetric, 1:1.5, 9x7cm, stalk short. FLOWERS several on spike, 1-2 open; ~2.5cmØ, white with purple outers; central petal (=keel) twisted sideways, ending in a beak spiralled ~3 turns. FRUIT linear pod, to 13x1cm, mainly hairless. SEEDS ~12, red-brown, kidneylike, 7x5mm.

SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Weed - minor. Comments: A potential weed in fallow areas. On Atiu it is sometimes locally very common and dominant.

GENERAL NOTE: ACSm suggests its indigenous across the Pacific. Wagner et.al. have it as indigenous in Hawaii.
