General Information

COMMON NAMES: East Polynesian Xylosma

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Tororī (MT); COMMENT: Rauriki (Cheeseman 1899) and Akeake (Wilder 1932)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Southeast Polynesia (Rarotonga - Australs - Pitcairn - Marquesas)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of se.Polynesia; S.Group (RR and makatea islands only - common); N.Group absent; Land, mountains (+++) and makatea

KEY FEATURES: Tree to 7m. LEAVES alternate, simple, oval, to 6x3cm, without hairs, rounded teeth. FLOWERS sexes on different plants (=dioecious); FEMALE tiny, with fleshy sepals, nil petals; MALE tiny disc with numerous small stamens. FRUIT round, ripening black.

TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); DILLENIIDAE; Violales; FLACOURTIACEAE. COMMENT: The Samoa endemic, Xylosma samoense, is sometimes listed in this species as Xylosma suaveolens samoense.
