Acanthastrea echinata (Dana, 1846)
TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; CNIDARIA (=Coelenterates); ANTHOZOA; ZOANTHARIA (=Hexacorallia); Scleractinia (=Madreporaria); MUSSIDAE
IDENTIFICATION: COLONY hemispherical, rounded or flattened. Colour variable. CORALLITES 10-15mmØ, share or have separate walls. SEPTA very mussid-like, having large teeth. COLUMELLA twisted and cross-hatched, made up of horizontal thickened and fused rods that project from the 1st and 2nd order septa. Side of septa and COSTAE covered in very fine granulations. REPRODUCTION intratentacular.
