General Information

COMMON NAMES: Scaly-legged Hermit-Crab

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ūngāpara (MG), Ungaungā Tai (MK MT), Unga Akau (AK), Unga-tai (TS TW); COMMENT: All the marine hermit-crabs are Ungaunga Tai (AT), Unga-tai (PN), Unga (RK).

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, especially on algal-ridge

KEY FEATURES: Bright red. Chelipeds and legs two and three ringed with large hairy scales. Chelipeds ± equal.
