General Information

COMMON NAMES: Makatea Cardisoma-Crab, Long-legged Cardisoma-Crab

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Īrave (MG MK MT), Iārave (AT)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE New Caledonia - Niue - Cooks - Makatea Island in Tuamotu

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - makatea islands only; N.Group absent; Land, coastal, breed in brachishwater

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Poisonous to eat - serious

KEY FEATURES: A dark Cardisoma with conspicuously long walking legs. Technically, the third walking leg (4th pereiopod) is 2x-or-more the carapace width. And the surface of the carapace is extensively granulated, as is the postfrontal crest.
