General Information

COMMON NAMES: Spot-handed Hermit-Landcrab

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ungaunga (AT), Unga Ka‘atea (AK), Unga Vae Yila (PK); COMMENT: Like the young of Coenobita perlata, called Unga Karatea.

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Indonesia - Cooks - Tuamotu

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, breed in ocean

KEY FEATURES: Smaller specimens in a variety of shells, larger animals in Turban shells. Generally pale brown, and the expanded palm has a single dark blotch or bar on the outer side.
