General Information

COMMON NAMES: Livid Cone

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE ? - Fr.Polynesia - Hawai‘i

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornament

KEY FEATURES: To 80mm long. Heavy, low gloss. Body whorl olive tan to blue-brown, with narrow sharp-edged white band at midbody, sharp-edged white shoulder band, and uniformly whitish spire; base dark purple. Body whorl with crowded ridges anteriorly belowing lower and more spaced above middle. Shoulder angular with large rounded coronations, spire low. Mouth, narrow, deep purple with pale zones in middle and under shoulder.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Conus sanguinolentus is almost identical, but differs in lacking pale midbody band, has narrower and less distinct pale band at shoulder, spire has pale tan markings on outer whorls, and mouth without pale mid-zone.
