General Information

COMMON NAMES: Blood-stained Cone

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Fr.Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornament

KEY FEATURES: To 50mm long. Heavy, low gloss. Body whorl yellow-tan to pale brown, sometimes paler centrally but without distinct band; spire whitish to olive with tan markings on outer whorls, base purple outside and inside. Main whorl with anterior spiral ridges with granules decreasing ans more separated by midbody. Shoulder roundly angled with rounded coronations. Spire low, blunt pointed, with straight to slightly concave edges. Mouth narrow, purple without any paler bands.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Almost identical to Conus lividus, see under that species.
