General Information

COMMON NAMES: Frigid Cone

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia - Japan - Fr.Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornament

KEY FEATURES: To 50mm long. Moderately heavy, dull olive tan, with indistinct yellowish band at midbody and below shoulder; outer spire uniformly yellowish-tan; base/anterior dark purple. Aperture/mouth purple with pale areas in middle and below shoulder. Spire low convex, spiral whorls have 3-4 distinct spiral ridges, shoulder rounded without coronations. Anterior half of main whorl with granulated spiral ridges, with fine axial threads within the low groove.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Conus flavidus is extremely similar, but it has a flatter spire with a more angled shoulder, white mid-whorl band is sharply defined, spiral whorls have very weak ridges; and spire uniformly whitish. Conus lividus and Conus sanguinolentus have coronations on shoulder.
