General Information

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Kū‘ani‘ani (MG), Tūtūau (MK), Pāpaka Tua‘uru‘uru (AK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE w.Pacific - Japan - Cooks - Tuamotu

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Poisonous to eat?

KEY FEATURES: Carapace 35x50mm. Mottled light and dark brown. Carapace strongly convex and covered with small lobules. Anterolateral border has many small rounded teeth. Cheliped unequal, and rough surfaced with small lobules; fingers are blunt-pointed with hollowed tips. The walking legs are rough surfaced with some spines on the edge, and fringed with long hairs. [mainly after Edmondson 1962]
