General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - French Polynesia - Hawai‘i

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group (RR, ?Outer Islands); ?N.Group; Marine, near-shore, outer reef-slope, reef-flat, moat & reef-flat lagoon

KEY FEATURES: Hemispherical, columnar, hillocky or flat. Corallites have own walls. Septa exsert, dentate, granulated, 2-3 orders. Coenosteum smooth, often blistered.

SIMILAR SPECIES: A distinctive Favia.

More Information

IDENTIFICATION: COLONY hemispherical, columnar, hillocky or flat, up to several metres across. CORALLITES have own walls. SEPTA exsert, dentate and granulated on sides, in 2 indistinct orders, sometimes with a third order of small septa in larger calices. 1st order septa reaching the columella often have uneven paliform lobes. COLUMELLA cross-barred & not easily noticed. THECAE thick. COENOSTEUM smooth, frequently blistered. REPRODUCTION intra-tentacular.
