General Information

COMMON NAMES: Lesser Brain Coral

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - French Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group (RR, ?Outer Islands); ?N.Group; Marine, near-shore, moat, outer reef-slope, reef-flat lagoon

KEY FEATURES: A hemispherical brain-coral. Walls formed by septa of neighbouring deep valleys are a constant width. Septal distance constant.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Platygyra daedalea is very similar in gross appearance but has wider grooves, most septa large but some small, loping inner edge, large teeth, and a wide spongy columella (vs smaller, uniform grooves of Leptoria phrygia).

More Information

IDENTIFICATION: COLONY hemispherical, up to 1mØ, having a gentle undulating surface. Brown or green brain-coral. SEPTA of neighbouring deep valleys join up forming walls of constant width. Distances between septa constant. Septa finely toothed with granulated sides. COLUMELLA does not form centres but is a continuous series of thin, long plates with wide lobes on upper edge. REPRODUCTION ????

GENERAL NOTE: Syn: A monospecific genus.
