General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotu

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: Colony usually hemispherical, rarely >50cm diam. Round to long-oval corallites, with with 1-3 centres. Tentacles are retracted during the day, but small mouths are often visible. Walls are thick, with rough appearance and spiny to touch. Dull greenish-brown with pale depressions. Septa in 4 or 2 orders. First order highly exert, tall blunt teeth (2-10), reach columella. Columella trabecular. Habitat: This is the main moat Lobophyllia, and common on Outer Reef-Slope. Range: e.Africa-Tuamotu

SIMILAR SPECIES: Easily separated when Lobophyllia hemprichii is meandoid with more than 3 centres. From monocentric L. hemprichii by smaller corallites with relatively regualr primary septa, regular, lobate dentations and better developed costae. [Veron and Pichon, Pt.III,p.274]
