General Information

COMMON NAMES: Stinging Feather-hydroid

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE circumtropical - including Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, benthic, attached

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: ; Poisonous sting - moderate

KEY FEATURES: A pale feather-like hydroid to 15cm high. The main stems are dark brown, and the lateral branches are white. The branches, which have the feeding polyps (=hydranths) on the upper surface only, have specialised defensive polyps with lots of stinging cells.
