Maruca vitrata (Fabricius, 1787)
SYNONYMS: Maruca testulalis
TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; ARTHROPODA; ATELOCERATA; HEXAPODA; INSECTA; PTERYGOTA; Lepidoptera; CRAMBIDAE
IDENTIFICATION: Small moth (12mmTL) dark greyish brown.
Body and legs slender. Fore wings have white patch and 1 or 2 smaller white spots. Hind wings mostly pearly white with dark brown edging and grey spots. Underside as upper side. Head, Thorax, Abdomen greyish brown. Legs and Antennae paler.
GENERAL NOTE: Biology: Caterpillar bores into legume pods; in Cooks, a major pest of export bean crops. Adults largely nocturnal.
