General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - French Polynesia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: Gp.10 A variable species, typically encrusting or submassive coral with surface hillocks. The calices are minute, and there are short, meandering and irregular hillocks (collines) in the septocostal region. The septocostae have a granular edge, forming peg-like teeth, cones and keel-like ridges.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Encrusting Psammocora contigua can only be separated by expert examination, although it is the species on high-light shallow water, while Psammocora superficialis is below 6m or in low-light habitats.
