General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indian Ocean - Indonesia - Cooks - Tuamotu - Hawai‘i

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore

KEY FEATURES: Carapace 15x27mm. Reddish-brown, but variable, often with dark-margined cream spots. Legs purple. Carapace oval, depressed, smooth, without clearly outlined areas. Anterolateral border with two indistinct lobes and two more distinct. Chelipeds unequal, large and smooth. Walking legs smooth with few hairs.Smooth oval carapace. [mainly after Edmondson 1962]

SIMILAR SPECIES: Very similar to Pseudozius inornatus. Only separated by expert comparison. The walking legs of inornatus have scattered tufts of hairs mainly on underside and in the joints - for those wanting to look.
