General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yellow Acorn-Worm

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Pacific - Cook Islands - Hawai‘i

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, mudflats

KEY FEATURES: Yellow, to 30cm, with a short acorn-like head. Behind the head there is a long collar, followed by the trunk. The "acorn" is the digging-nose (=proboscis) and the mouth is immediately behind the proboscis.

GENERAL NOTE: This animal is related to the animals which bridged the evolutionary gap between the animals without-backbones (=Invertebrates) and animals with-backbones (vertebrates). As a result, this worm-like creature, and its larval development, have been intensely studied by scientists.
