General Information

COMMON NAMES: Spiny Turban

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Alili (TS PK), Ariri (TW)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; N.Group only - common; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: A bulbous spiral shell, to 7.5cm in length. The opening is closed by a round, bulbous operculum (=the "cat's-eye"). The shell has low spiral ridges, usually bearing short spines. The spirals are separated by a distinct groove, and the columella has an obvious hole beside the mouth of the shell.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Turbo setosus is similar in size and shape. See under that species.
