General Information

COMMON NAMES: Rough Turban

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ariri (MG MK MT AK TW), Karikao (AT), Alili (TS); COMMENT: Pātoa = operculum (AK)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - common; ?N.Group; Marine, near-shore

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: A bulbous spiral shell, to 7.5cm in length. The opening is closed by a round, bulbous operculum (=the "cat's-eye"). The shell has low longitudinal ridges, without protuding spines. The larger spirals join without a groove to the smaller spirals; and the columella is solid.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Turbo argyrostomus is similar in general appearance and size. argyrostomus is distinguished by usually having spines on the longitudinal ridges, a distinct inter-spiral groove; and an obvious hole in the columella beside the mouth of the shell.

POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Food. Comments: An important subsistence food. It is commonly used in mitiore, a dish of grated, fermented coconut-meat.
